Interns catch a big vision of their futures in the industry through Carson Group’s “internship to ownership” initiative for college students from underrepresented communities. The two-year apprenticeship rotates them through structured financial and management experiences, positioning them for a fast start in the specialty they choose to pursue.

“By the time they’re done with the full program, they’ll be ready to work in any planning firm in the country — or even start their own firm. We’re looking forward to bringing on the second cohort this summer,” said Mary Kate Gulick, senior vice president of advisor marketing at Carson Group.

Meanwhile, Carson’s annual report on the status of women in wealth management has become a go-to resource for media and advocates.

“I was most surprised about two things: that balancing work with caregiving obligations is still the biggest barrier to staying in the business and that only a third of organizations surveyed have at least one woman on their leadership team,” Gulick said. “I thought that with all the conversation over the last 25 years, we would have seen more progress in these areas.”
